As mid-season rapidly approaches, Charter Oak would take 9 wrestlers to its third individual tournament of the year, Upland High Schools, Blackwatch Tournament. The Chargers would end the tournament finishing 24th out of 66 teams.
Day one looked promising, the Chargers had 7 of 9 still in the tournament as the last round of competition began. Unfortunately 3 would fall losing by points 5-0, 11-8, and 3-2. The start of the second day held more woes for the Chargers as both 170 lbs wrestlers would be eliminated in their first match. Leaving Noah Villalobos (145) and Gustavo Garcia (160) to carry the torch for the Chargers.
Villalobos would lose a highly contested match with South Hills 21-12, that saw a lot of action with both wrestlers going for broke. In the consolation round Villalobos faced a tough opponent from Apple Valley and lost by pin, 56 seconds into the 3 period.
Garcia wrestled well throughout the tournament to earn a spot in the finals against 1st seed Jon Smith from Birmingham. After six minutes of hard wrestling with a score of 4-4, the match would be decided in a sudden victory overtime. Smith would score a late takedown with only seconds remaining, putting Garcia in the 2nd spot on the podium for the second time this season.
The Charger will look to add to the podium Jan. 7th at Ayala High Schools Tri-Titan Classic.
